Hey guys!
That's Yankee talk for "hey y'all!" Like I mentioned during our introductions, I grew up in Buffalo, New York. After finishing high school, I joined the Navy as a meteorologist. While attending weather school, I met and married a U.S. Marine (ooo-rah) who trained along side of me. Not exactly a campus romance, but the military is not exactly a college campus.
When we started having children, I left active duty and became a military spouse. This ended up being tougher than active duty. I watched my husband deploy to the first Gulf War and while he was away, wound up playing nurse to three of our four children who came down with chicken pox. Years later when he was stationed at the Pentagon, I waited in stunned silence to hear whether or not he had survived the 9/11 attacks. We were fortunate, but lost a dear neighbor's daughter who was there as well on that day. My daughter, Andrea, and I plan to participate in this year's 9/11 Memorial 5K by doing a "virtual" run. As long as I finish a 3.2 mile run/walk on September 6th, my run counts.
At one point in our military career, we were stationed at the Stennis Space Center. After my husband retired from the Corps, we chose this area for the climate and to be close to our two grandchildren. Bill has residual health concerns from the Gulf War, so the southern climate is good for him. If I can just make it through these extremely hot summer days down here, I enjoy this area. At least I won't EVER have to shovel snow that is piled two feet deep!
The thing that I like best about working on campus is the constant flow of new people coming to Southern Miss. I have met people from all over this country as well as international students and love sharing customs. The variety of food in Hattiesburg is amazing and travel to New Orleans is simple.
